DAVIE Talent Quest Florida
landed in Davie for the first time
on June 17, and the pop and
country crowds were out in full
force. Both the men and women's
country categories were crowded
and the women also dominated in
the pop division.
Only a few participants were in
the master's category.
"There was a balance that we
honestly didn't expect," said
emcee and contest co-owner
Steve Blanchard. "I guess because
the finals were in an American Legion, we had anticipated a larger master's category. That
proves that you shouldn't create any expectations before heading into a new venue."
The atmosphere was described as "interesting" by the judges and there was some concern that
some contestants didn't take the contest seriously. However, several performers came
prepared and dressed ready to take a title.
"I have to admit that on one of the contestant's critiques I actually wrote 'You just wasted my
time,'" said Phil Garris, contest co-owner and head judge. "It was a shame because he is a
talented singer. It can be frustrating when contestants don't realize what they've gotten
themselves into, but we always have to remember that not all participants in a new venue
have researched Talent Quest Florida. I could definitely tell who had prepared and who didn't."
Following the contest several contestants said that they appreciated the critique sheets
provided by the judges and that they would use the information constructively for the regional
finals in Tampa on July 9-11 at the DoubleTree Westshore Hotel.
