Surprises could come out of Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Things
got started a little late but the
talent finally made an
appearance at The Metro on
Sunday, June 13. Due to
scheduling conflicts for a few
contestants, Talent Quest
Florida's local final took place
in two parts.
"This was a different way for
us to do a qualifier," admitted
Steve Blanchard, contest
co-owner and emcee. "But on
the local side we have the
ability to be flexible. It worked
in this case and we met some
great contestants for this year's competition."
Head judge and TQFL co-owner Phil Garris said that despite the small number of contestants in
Jacksonville, there could be several dark horses.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we have at least one Top 10 finalist out of this group," Garris said. "I
can also say that a dark horse or two out of this group could take the title. But I'm not going to
elaborate on that just yet."
The Metro is the sixth venue in 2011 and this is the first time it has hosted Talent Quest
Florida. Rather than holding local qualifying rounds, the venue decided to hold one large open
final. Management of the bar has expressed interest in returning in 2011, however, and will
release details on that competition sometime after this year's regional finals.
Talent Quest Florida is the largest Talent Quest Regional competition in the world and nearly
400 singers are expected to participate at the July 9-11 competition at the DoubleTree
Westshore Hotel in Tampa.
"Every venue has a starting year and I'm sure Metro will grow with experience," Garris said.
"We'd love to be back there in 2011.
