OCALA--It was obvious at first that the Talent Quest Florida qualifying singers in Ocala weren't used to singing in the afternoon, but after some early confusion and some drinks, everyone settled down and the competition turned out to be a strong one. The 2 p.m. competition on Saturday, June 20, was somewhat small, but the talent was anything but. "Again, visiting a new venue is always a learning experience for us here at Talent Quest Florida and for the venue and local singers," said Phil Garris, head judge and TQFL co-owner. "I think the singers were a little nervous at first but they came into their own." Our Place Saloon was the 20th stop for Talent Quest Florida's staff and judges this year and part of the "west Florida swing" that started with Dunedin on Thursday and Spring Hill on Saturday. After the Ocala stop Talent Quest Florida makes its final stop in Belleview on Sunday. "Our Place Saloon had a really well-run competition," said TQFL co-owner and emcee Steve Blanchard. "I think the singers and the bar have a better idea of what we're all about now and I really hope we get a chance to return in 2010. Everyone was very gracious and we immediately felt like we were with family. I loved it." Qualified singers advanced to finals and will vie for a chance to win a trip to nationals in Laughlin, Nevada, this September. Contestants at the Florida regional will also compete for karaoke packages provided by Chartbusters Karaoke.
